High Resolution Digital Aerial Imagery vs High Resolution Satellite Imagery – Part 1

The gap between these two usually complementary mapping technologies is getting smaller as both satellite and aerial imaging systems have benefited from great technology improvements in the last decade. These technologies can even overlap in terms of resolution, meaning that issues such as accuracy, acquisition and processing time need to be taken into account . It is more of a challenge to make informed decisions about which technology to choose for a mapping project. Nevertheless, each technology is alive and well and possess unique characteristics and strengths which need to be highlighted. Read more

Digital Elevation, Digital Terrain or Digital Surface Model?

A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is generally a file containing elevation values representing the terrain height over a specific area of the earth. A DEM can be a raster file: in this case each record is a 3-dimensional element usually associated with geographic coordinates at a fixed grid interval. The denser the grid, the more information the digital elevation model will possess and the more variation in the terrain will be recorded. A DEM with an irregular grid is called a TIN DEM (Triangular Irregular Network) and can be the result of direct 3D point measurements. Read more »

Realistic landscape: Wilpena Pound 3D Fly-through

Wilpena Pound is a natural amphitheatre of mountains located 429 kilometres north of Adelaide, South Australia in the heart of the Flinders Ranges National park.

High resolution images from multiple sensors can be combined with digital elevation information derived from photogrammetry, Lidar, Radar to produce detailed 3D visualizations and fly-through.  The fly-through below  has been generated using a 70cm digital aerial orthophotography wrapped over a digital elevation model.
